There is a large learning aspect involved with everything we do here at 1-800Accountant. It is basically impossible to know everything about everything in the field of accounting. Since we work with clients across the country and in some foreign countries, there is always more to learn.
What’s the toughest type of accounting/tax situation you’ve dealt with and how was it handled?
My role is a bit different as the majority of my client interaction is typically at the end when things may not have worked out and a client is closing their company. More often than not, a client’s records and information are messy or they have missed various filing requirements. From my experience, one of the hardest things for a new business owner is compliance. Very complicated tax situations only come about once in a while but being compliant with the IRS or state is something that affects all businesses, big or small. For example, one client I had spoken with recently had local tax filings in their county which they did not even know existed. They have been delinquent for over two years and had penalties and interest that accrued over that period. The local tax office had told them, "You opened a business here, you should have known." Many new business owners typically do not know all the ins and outs of running a business which is why they look to firms like ours for help and guidance. On my side, helping the client was fairly straightforward. It involved a bit of research and preparing the necessary filings, but it's the little things like this that have the biggest impact.
