1) Being self-motivated

To get to the point of being a successful small business owner, it takes a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. Throughout this challenging process, your level of self-motivation must be high. This is incredibly vital during the startup phase of a business and the ongoing process of maintaining it over time. You have to believe in yourself, sell yourself to others, and wake up each day with a drive to reach for the stars. This may all sound cliché, but being self-motivated is a trait that the majority of successful business owners possess.

2) Being a good problem-solver

Problems arise all the time in the business world, no matter how hard you try to prevent them from happening. That’s why you have to be able to face them head-on and find solutions to them. Some problems are simpler than others to resolve, so you’ve got to be prepared and willing to think outside the box. You should also avoid getting frazzled by problems or conflicts when you can. Others will have a lot more respect for you. From resolving an issue among employees to figuring out how to fix a computer, you should be motivated to solve any problem and do it effectively.

3) Being goal-driven

Small business owners who can focus on achieving goals they set for themselves are much more likely to enjoy a fulfilling experience in their work. If you set reasonable goals for tasks to check off your to-do list, you’ll be able to complete them in a way that produces a better outcome. Occasionally reward yourself for getting difficult things done as well. Financial goals are also a big part of the small business ownership game, so shoot for the financial stars, but be reasonable about your profit projections.

4) Having an open mind

Open-mindedness is a must when overseeing a business venture. You’ll be dealing with all kinds of people. Because of this, you’ll be presented with a wide range of viewpoints. Take each one into consideration when decision-making duties come into play. You have to realize that just because you think something might work well, getting input from others will provide you with a more balanced approach. Don’t take criticism personally, either. It’s also important to be open-minded about learning how to do new things, including technology, business accounting subjects, and other things that you may have limited experience with.

5) Being a top-notch planner

Are you a planner who makes use of a calendar to schedule lots of tasks for the future? If so, there’s a good chance you’ll succeed at running a company. Having the ability to plan ahead can make your life less stressful. It’s not easy to look into a crystal ball, but it is worth at least thinking toward the future, which you can do by being prepared. Consider what your next step may be, whether it’s making a phone call to a colleague, sending an important e-mail to a client, or meeting with a supplier in-person. Do what you need to do to make these experiences worthwhile for everyone involved. A little forethought can go a long way.
