Entrepreneur Laurie Bernhard of Under the New Moon, LLC discovered startup success with her small business that sells herbal and aroma therapy products.

Laurie Bernhard, or “Morika” as her customers affectionately call her, learned about the great benefits of herbal products and aromatherapy many years ago. In fact, she used them to help treat her late son. After working for 9 years as a sole proprietor, Bernhard finally took the leap of faith to set up her own small business – Under The New Moon, LLC.

Headquartered out of Bernhard’s home office in Visalia, California, the company took on its current LLC designation in March 2014.

“I’m a trained herbalist and aromatherapist,” Bernhard explains. “I run a metaphysical, New Age-based online store focusing on herbal and aromatherapy products.”

The store is based at Its array of offerings includes oils, teas, candles, incense, and other handcrafted items and concoctions. Many of these items are specially designed to help people suffering from some kind of physical ailment. However, they do come with a disclaimer that they are not a replacement for actual medical treatment.

“Whether you have eczema, gout, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, or headaches, I can come up with something for you as an adjunct to your current therapy with your medical doctor,” she says.

Bernhard studied at the Institute of Aromatic and Herbal Studies in San Francisco, California to improve her knowledge and skills in this area. She received instruction from Jeanne Rose, a pioneer in American herbalism. Because of her love for these types of products and the experience she has gained over time, it only felt right to start a business in this industry.

She says her clientele consists of individuals who practice a New Age/Pagan lifestyle and anyone interested in unique items that might have some significance to their lives.

Bernhard talks about how she has separated her small business from the rest of the pack.

“Companies that sell these types of items are a dime a dozen,” she explains. “The key that draws people to my site is the fact that many of my products are uniquely handcrafted. People particularly come back for my oils, therapeutic teas, and custom products.”

In addition, she takes great pride in offering top-notch customer service to each and every person who makes a purchase from her website.

“My customers have become friends and feel like extended family. I always include a special goodie bag and a handwritten note with each package I send out. It’s all about putting your customers over your products or services.”

To make others aware of her company, Bernhard utilizes a variety of Internet-based marketing methods. These include e-mail marketing, Facebook ads, and maintaining basic social media pages. She has pages on both Facebook and Twitter for the business.

Tips For Small Business Owners

Thanks to her own experience, Bernhard offers some tips for small business owners who are already established and aspiring entrepreneurs looking to try their hand at business ownership.

“Know what sets you apart from other companies,” she advises. “If you aren’t different and don’t offer something unique, you will probably just blend in with everyone else and won’t be set apart. You can’t expect a cool logo on your website to set you apart. It might be all about technology today, but people still desire that great customer service. Take the time to write a thank-you note to a customer. You might be amazed at how much of a positive impact it will have on your business.”

As a 1-800Accountant client, Bernhard says she’s been extremely happy with the business accounting services she has received.

“I’m afraid of numbers, math, and taxes, so I am glad to have the support of a company like 1-800Accountant handling all of this for me,” Bernhard says.

She adds that she’d gladly recommend the firm to any entrepreneurs seeking business accounting services at affordable prices.
