What is Payroll?

When a business hires employees and begins the process of paying salaries, that would be the commencement of the payroll process. This process involves:

  • Registering the business as an employer and payor of wages at the Federal and state levels
  • For certain types of businesses, primarily regular corporations, known as C-Corporations and tax-advantaged corporations, known as S-Corporations have certain requirements to pay the business owners a reasonable salary. Owners of businesses operating as Sole Proprietors or through a partnership, as these types of business entities the owners will take a draw or distributions and pay estimated taxes on the business earnings at the Federal and state level.
What are Quarterly Estimated Taxes?

If you’re a freelancer or contractor, or you own and operate a small business, the IRS requires that you pay Estimated Taxes four times a year. You can either calculate your payment by making a prediction of what you’ll make in the year, or by tallying the exact amount you made in the quarter.

Quarterly estimated tax deadlines each year fall on:

  • April 15th
  • June 15th
  • September 15th
  • January 15th of the following year.

Audit defense is usually offered by a tax preparation or accounting company. In entails the company or accountant that prepared a tax return standing by to defend the return and liaise with the IRS in the event of an audit.

What is a Tax Extension?

A Tax Extension is an exemption granted by the IRS for businesses and individuals who need additional time to file their returns. An approved extension will give the taxpayer an additional 6-months from tax day to file. For S-Corporations and Partnerships, the new deadline is September 15th, and for other businesses and individuals, the new deadline is October 15th.
