Carol Staudacher has lots of knowledge and experience working with both personal family members and patients who have ADHD, which affects about 8% of children and 6% of adults. She decided to take her knowledge and experience, wrap it up in a pretty box, and share it with others who could benefit greatly from it.
Staudacher, an entrepreneur and client of 1-800Accountant, proudly manages her own small business called Grandma Carol’s Corner, LLC. It’s based right out of her home in Lake Leelanau, Michigan and was officially established in March 2014.
Through the startup company, the grandmother of 13 is educating fellow grandparents about some of the challenges their grandkids face, particularly when it comes to ADHD and other learning and behavioral conditions prevalent in about two-thirds of children with ADHD.
“I have learned that this older population doesn’t understand the three basic features of ADHD which includes inattention, physical hyperactivity, and impulsivity,” Staudacher says. “I want to be able to inform them so that they can have more positive interactions with their grandchildren with ADHD. Most of these children receive so much negativity because of their challenging behavior. More positive reinforcements could trigger a better self-image in these kids which might help to improve their functional levels.”
Staudacher, a former nurse with a master’s degree in psychiatric nursing, used to send out a family newsletter to her grandchildren and called it Grandma Carol’s Corner. She would include news about all the grandchildren as well as information on various health issues, including ADHD. Little did she know that one day she would run her own startup business with the same name! She has her own website – www.grandmac.co – and plans to launch a blog on which she’ll feature a plethora of articles and information about ADHD for grandparents as well as for their grandchildren.
“It’s discouraging to see so many of these children struggle so much with their schoolwork in grammar school and high school,” she says. “Many of them want to attend college, but fail because they haven’t learned appropriate study and organizational skills to accommodate their unique learning disabilities. Many of them end up with low-paying jobs even though they may have creative talents which, if nurtured, could lead to advances in industrial or scientific fields or even the arts. Many of these children also have a unique characteristic of thinking “outside the box,” which enhances their creativity.”
While education is a primary reward in the business, Staudacher hopes to generate some revenue through her for-profit venture. She plans to use Google AdWords, which posts ads relating to the business focus to increase the number of visitors on the site. Revenue is generated by the number of clicks to the site each day.
<h2>Small Business Competition</h2>
Entrepreneurs strive to pursue the latest and greatest ideas that have yet to be taken in order to discover startup success. Fortunately for Staudacher, she feels like she has found a niche in her industry that has largely been untapped by others.
“I couldn’t find much at all about grandparent involvement in dealing with ADHD. Plus, grandkids generally have a special place in their hearts for their grandparents. I was thinking that getting a little more involved with schoolwork and projects might make a difference. Parents could also use a little reprieve from handling the daily stress of dealing with the nuances associated with ADHD.”

Staudacher offers some tips for fellow entrepreneurs looking for an opportunity to jump into a new small business venture.
“I would say research your area of interest to see how much business is out there already,” she says. “Look at websites, blogs, and other informational resources. Have a definite business plan in mind. I think I went into this without doing as much research as I could have in the beginning.”
She admits there are both advantages and disadvantages to being self-employed.
“I travel a lot, especially in the winter. But I can take my business with me. It would be more difficult if I depended on that income to support myself or my family, as one isn’t guaranteed a steady paycheck.”

Alex Pasternak and Aaron Shapiro are crazy about hummus. After the two roommates discovered that their hummus consumption was beginning to dent their wallets, the roommates decided they’d better learn how to make it themselves. The pair discovered that they had a knack for making their own hummus creations, and Two Brothers Hummus, LLC was born from there. The small business was formally established in August of 2014 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They do paperwork inside of their home office, but have a kitchen outside of their home where they prepare the food. Once their orders are prepared, they deliver them locally.“When we started making our own hummus, our friends tried it and they loved it. So one day I sat down with Aaron and said, ‘We should sell this and deliver it.’ From there, we started from basic recipes and then we started to adapt those recipes. We’ve done our research and these are the only places that would provide a threat — if any — only because they make hummus. We’ve given up every weekend we’ve had to cook and deliver,” Pasternak says. “No one cares about this company more than me and my partner. For Alexis van den Berg, the road to her own business was a long and winding one. The Inside Drive shares a common goal and demographic with the established Men’s Refinery. This partnership lessens the risk typical of startups to attract clients, but also allows both to explore new demographics by playing off each other’s strengths. “Being an entrepreneur is a very rewarding task, so it’s a matter of understanding your own risk profile, and it’s finding people who support you and teaming up with others,” he advises.

I kind of stand alone, which is beneficial,” he confides.<h3>Challenges of Small Business Ownership</h3>Like many small business owners in the startup stages of success, Gentner has experienced challenges in the form of materializing an idea he has had since he was a teen and turning it into a fruitful endeavor.“I’ve always had an idea for what I wanted to do. The challenges were looking at the big picture of everything I had to get done instead of taking small bites. The concept itself was always there. Frankly, the red tape and getting all the licensing and paperwork done was the hardest part for me more so than the aesthetic aspect,” he admits. “The downside is that since it is your thing, the free time isn’t there as much. Entrepreneur Steve Wellman fell in love with motorcycles at age 7 and hopped on his first bike when he was 16. The power and speed of these snazzy vehicles immediately swept him off his feet. Little did he know he’d be starting a business with the goal of creating one of the world’s fastest production motorcycles.
In February 2015, Wellman formally established Wellmann Motorcycles, LLC in his hometown of Wenatchee, Washington. (He added the extra “n” to the name of the small business in honor of how his German ancestors used to spell it.)
Wellman is in the early stages of developing a prototype for the “super bike” he intends to make come to life, hopefully within the next year. He is teaming up with a bike designer and parts maker in the motorcycle industry in Southern California who is producing an incredible V4 MotoGP engine and frame himself.
“When he offered me the motor for use with my bike, it immediately elevated my bike into the stratosphere,” Wellman confides. “I intend to make a new classification of motorcycles that takes their inspiration from supercars like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti,&nbsp;Koenigsegg, and&nbsp;Pagani. The&nbsp;Koenigsegg and&nbsp;Pagani models are my favorite because they incorporate the highest-quality design, materials, and production techniques to make a car that has no compromise on quality.”
According to Wellman, the biggest key in designing any vehicle that can be driven at very high speeds comes down to perfecting the power-to-weight ratio. He is attempting to design a bike with a 1:1 horsepower-per-pound ratio with over 300 horsepower in total.
“I’m pursuing every kind of technological advantage I can get to reduce weight and increase strength,” he explains. “I am using carbon fiber materials from the aerospace industry. It’s a special kind of pre-preg carbon fiber that is cured inside an autoclave, which is a high-pressured oven. Pound for pound, this material is stronger than steel.”
He is teaming up with South African manufacturer BlackStone Tek, a premier authority in carbon prepreg autoclave motorcycle parts. The wheels of his bike will be less than half the weight of a motorcycle wheel and are up to 3 times stronger.
His eventual goal is to make 2 prototypes – one to show others and one for testing. His dream is to take the testable prototype to the famous Nürburgring in German and the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.
He’s clearly a bike enthusiast at heart and points to the historical perspective he has gained on the industry through his own research. He talks about the old Vincent Motorcycles brand from generations ago, which set a world land record for speed at 150 mph back in the 1950s.
“I want to achieve over 200mph myself and let others go for the 240mph speed that I think is achievable,” he says. Wellman, 65, is a retired teacher who taught high school art for 21 years. He says it was a former student who got him interested in road racing. He finally got his racing license at age 60 at Portland International Raceway in Oregon and is now proudly starting a business to achieve his lifelong dream.
“It’s my belief that people who design super cars make them to see how far we can take human nature and how far vehicle design can be taken, and I am fascinated by that idea,” he says. “I love seeing people push the limits.”
<h2>Tips for Entrepreneurs of All Ages</h2>
Wellman offers up some tips for entrepreneurs of any age – and at any stage in their lives.
“Everyone should be encouraged to follow their stars,” he advises. “Even if you’re retired, which isn’t my favorite word in the world, go for your dreams. Follow the dreams of a 7-year-old, no matter how old you are. My dad gave me a little plaque that says, ‘Dreams can’t come true if you don’t have any.’ One of my friends told me I have 10 lives’ worth of dreams.”

Thus far, Wellman has used personal money to start his research and development (R&amp;D). However, he plans to delve into crowdfunding and hopes to find some investors in the near future who will back his idea financially.
